On monday afternoon one of the uncles on the paternal side of my family finally breathed his last. He was dying of cancer. Before he had a lovely round face but it became thin and pasty over time and poor Auntie has been biting her nails. She was last described as "all cried out" by mum and dad and the funeral will be held on friday. I didn't know him all that well (we hardly ever see the paternal relatives) but what I did know of him: I think he was a lovely man. It was one of his sons that was the cousin that topped himself at the age of 21. Mum tells me it was apparently becuase he was having sexuality problem. Ah well- life goes on and one's shortcomings makes others all the more wiser. On top of that a property manager here at work (a GREAT character of a woman always dressing in gorgeous colours and bringing laughter into this dull office) has found she has cancer in one of her thighs. She recently had an operation to get it cut out. When she first came into the office she was walking finely on two legs fast-paced walking and smiling and makeup done perfectly. Since yesterday she has been limping around using a crutch a bit more quiet in character now her smiles are only sad ones and her face is so so much more paler. Poor dear. Her recent stance on this: "If there was a god- I'd kick his arse."In 2002-3 one of my aunts had the cancer invade her body to the death as well. It ruined my 17th Birthday and my big sister was pissed off at the time because she tried to hold a party for me but.. we weren't really in the mood. It was a more emotional time for the family too- because this aunt was on the maternal side and as I said before we see more of the maternal side. This was the aunt that taught me how to sing and lead me to win a trophy when I was eight years old. She was a chatterbox and her husband who only JUST coped with her death with the help of their three daughters is a silent 'old codger' so to speak. They completed one another. That said- there were a lot of tears. I know a man who had his dad die of the cancer when he was just seven or five. (shame on me for not remembering) and he told me that this was the worst time of his life. Or the saddest. I think it changed him to the extent where he wanted to push all the tragedy in his life to that one period and as a result he only focuses on the GOOD points in life now. But sometimes to the point where he brushes over things he really should not. When a little boy sees his Daddy waste away into nothingness- you can imagine how that would traumatise him. What about those of us who have Cancer as our starsign? Despite the depressing overview of this post (strangely enough- as I write this. I'm not depressed- Just contemplative) and despite the fact that it's the same name as a fatal disease. I have to randomly say here that I LIKE Cancerians! They are the perfect blend of caring and not caring and they are I live with one my little sister is one a new friend is one and an old friend who I haven't seen in a while is one too. *At this point. I guess the reason for this post is to give a thought for all those that are a victim of the invisible killer and this affects me because the word 'cancer' seems to be popping up in my life again and again. Somebody said to me this year that "Humankind is a cancer." No no my dear. It is only some ideas and attitudes that can be called that. But to go into this. I'd have to fall upon the topic of MEMEs and you wouldn't want to read essays on that. Believe me. Rest in Peace dear old Uncle John.
